What Will We Catch?

Eastern Lake Erie has developed a reputation as a world-class fishery for walleye, one of the most sought after fish for table fare. Limit catches are not uncommon, nor is it unusual to catch one in the 8-9 lb range, with several trophies over 10lbs taken each year. There is also a very good fishery for the high jumping steelhead, or the deep fighting lake trout. Steelhead in the 10 lb range are taken regularly, and 20 lb plus lakers are not unusual.

One of the great things about Lake Erie is the diversity of the fish that can be caught on any given day. In addition to the walleye, steelhead and lake trout, you may also land a brown trout, smallmouth bass, as well as perch, sheephead, white bass, silver bass and every once in a great while, a king salmon.

For our trips to Western Lake Ontario, in the spring our primary focus is coho salmon. These hard fighters are a blast to catch, and if you find one, you often will land several! Later in the year we do battle with the king salmon, easily one of the best fighters on the lake. Fish in the 20 lb range are plentiful, and every now and then you’ll get a chance at a monster over 30 lbs! These truly will test you and the equipment! Offshore, Lake Ontario has a wonderful fishery for steelhead whose leaping ability is unmatched!
